Minimum wages in 2023: Annual Review

In terms of minimum wage setting, 2022 will be remembered well as an outstanding year for two reasons. High inflation rates that had not been seen in decades triggered the need to substantially uprate gross wages nominally. But it was also the year in which the EU-level negotiators reached agreement on the directive on adequate minimum wages.

Towards a Just Transition of Argentina

The transition to a sustainable economy has become a global priority in response to today's environmental and climate challenges. This process implies a profound change in production and consumption systems. We are interested in pointing out three fundamental aspects of this transition: the shift towards clean and renewable sources of energy, the adoption of sustainable production and consumption practices, and the sustainable production and consumption practices, and the promotion of the circular economy and efficient resource management. In the area of labor relations, three dimensions can be identified to facilitate a sustainable transition: a) social dialogue and stakeholder participation, b) collective bargaining and labor agreements, and c) the adaptation of skills and training of workers. Sustainable skills training and the promotion of engaged citizenship are also key elements in addressing this global challenge. Environmental sustainability must be taught and addressed as a shared responsibility. A shared responsibility implies that all actors involved recognize their individual and collective responsibility - as far as climate change is concerned - and are prepared to contribute and participate in the search for solutions.

Renewable energy jobs

Worldwide employment in the renewable energy sector reached 12.7 million last year, a jump of 700,000 new jobs in just 12 months, despite the lingering effects of COVID-19 and the growing energy crisis, according to a new report published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in collaboration with the UN’s International Labour Organization (ILO).

The editor in chief for this edition of the ILERA Newsletter is Jane Parker

Jane is Adjunct Professor of Employment Relations (ER) and HRM at Massey University in Aotearoa New Zealand. Her research foci include comparative ER, workplace equality, & employee consultation. Jane is an associate fellow of the Industrial Relations Research Unit (IRRU) at the University of Warwick in England, and co-director of the Massey People, Organisation, Work and Employment Research (MPOWER) Group. She has led various ILO-funded projects in the Pacific and with Eurofound, and is a senior researcher at the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) in Brussels.
